Long-serving manager leaves after poor start to season

Robinson was appointed to the role in May 2010, leading them to promotion into the Championship after achieving their highest placed finish in the short history of the club. Out of a total of 345 games at the helm, Robinson oversaw 147 victories. However after relegation last season, combined with a poor start to this season, Robinson hinted after Saturday’s home defeat to Southend United that he could be set to move on.

He met up with chairman Pete Winkelman today, were it was mutually agreed that they would part company. Head of coaching Richie Barker will take over on a temporary basis at Stadium mk. The club sit just a point above the League One relegation zone after 15 matches.

Only Arsene Wenger and Paul Tisdale, managers of Arsenal and Exeter City respectively, have been in their respective roles longer than Robinson, who was part of Paul Ince’s coaching staff prior to his appointment. He had also been on the coaching staff at Blackburn Rovers, also alongside Ince.

Robinson helped to install an attractive brand of football to the club, and helped nurture several talents from the academy into the first-team, none more high profile than current Tottenham Hotspur and England midfielder Dele Alli. The Dons also defeated Manchester United in a memorable cup tie two years ago (highlights at the bottom of this page). Earlier this year, Robinson turned down the chance to become the next head coach of Leeds United. He now finds himself out of work, but he was an undoubted success at Milton Keynes Dons Football Club.
