Juventus eye Championship keeper as Buffon replacement

According to Goal, Aston Villa goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini is among the list of names Juventus are considering as a long-term replacement for Gianluigi Buffon. The Juve and Italy captain turns 39 early next year, and boss Massimiliano Allegri is now sounding out future goalkeeping options to step into the shoes of the footballing icon.

Highly-rated Milan youngster Gianluigi Donnarumma and also Udinese shot-stopper Alex Meret are two other names being considered by the Italian giants. Although 21-year-old Gollini only moved to Villa Park from Hellas Verona in July, he is already being sounded out for a potential move away.

The link perhaps is not the greatest of shocks as Gollini did make a decent impression in Serie A last season after he broke into a Verona side that went on to be relegated into the Italian second-tier. He has been capped by Italy at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level, and was also on the books of Manchester United as a youngster, prior to making his Serie A debut in 2014.

Most Italians would find it very difficult to reject the temptation to join a huge club such as Juventus, with the Turin club dominating the Italian game for some time now. Although Gollini perhaps hasn’t set the world alight in a Villa shirt up until now, he is certainly a keeper with a very bright future in the game. Being linked with Juventus is proof of that. The video below demonstrates some of the reasons why Gollini is attracting such interest.
