Former Aston Villa defender starts training with Cardiff City

Cardiff City head coach Neil Warnock has told BBC Sport that Kieran Richardson has started training with the club.

The 31-year-old defender, who can also play as a winger, had been at Villa for two years but was released following their relegation from the Premier League and hasn’t been able to find a club since. However he now has the chance to earn a new contract after he was given a chance by Cardiff’s new manager Warnock to train with the Bluebirds and show him that Richardson does deserve a deal with the club. He will have some time to do it as well as Warnock will not make a decision until Wednesday (19th October).

And Richardson will be heartened by the fact Cardiff have been very happy to sign free agents following the appointment of Warnock. In just his few days in charge he signed Sol Bamba, Junior Hoilett and Marouane Chamakh and if Richardson impressed enough in his week at the club, he could be Warnock’s fourth signing since he took charge.

Warnock said: “I’ve had Kieran down this week. But it is a matter of chatting to him and seeing what the situation is,”

“I would like to take him on board. We’ll probably make a decision today. We’ll have a full session with him today and I said I’d have a chat with him after training.”

When asked about Chamakh, he added: “He has a bit of a reputation in certain areas,”

“One or two people in the club mentioned to me about his reputation and they mentioned three of four things that he’s renowned for. I added a couple to that, hence why we’ve taken him until January.”

“I think he’s changed as a person. His partner is here with him and he’s got a little baby now. And I think that will be good for him.”
