Derby County: club reappoint McClaren – fan reactions

A mere 16-and-a-half months after giving him the boot from the iPro, Derby County have brought back ex-manager Stven McLaren to rescue the Rams’ 2016/17 Championship campaign.

The returnee to the job was sacked by Derby in May 2015 after an end-of-season review found it unacceptable that the former England boss had not driven the Rams to the Premier League, Derby suffering a massive lapse as the season ended that saw them drop out of the running for promotion.

After being managerless following the ‘mutually agreed’ leaving of Nigel Pearson, Derby have dipped back into their managerial black book and have brought back McClaren to the club.

With an incoming manager there is usually changes behind the scene but a statement on the Derby County website said this wasn’t to be so. According to the official club statement: “Assistant Manager Chris Powell, First Team Coach Kevin Phillips and Goalkeeping Coach Pascal Zuberbuhler will all retain their places within McClaren’s backroom team.

Speaking on his appointment, McClaren told the club website: “I am excited to be back at Derby County as the club’s manager. I have a great affiliation with the club, having been here on three previous occasions, and I am really delighted at the prospect of finishing what we started back in September 2013. I regret how my time at Derby ended back in 2015 and I am very motivated to put things right for the club and our supporters.”

As with any appointment, fans will have their say – it is no different in this case as Twitter voices its opinions.

McClaren brought back to the iPro – fans reactions over on Twitter.

Newcastle fan Mark wonders if they can claim for the Magpies’ relegation from the Premier League.

Neil has a sly dig at the manner of McClaren’s reappointment.

Derby fan Matthew is more blunt and to the point.

However, not all Derby fans see it as a negative appointment.

Jonny agrees with the above, even if he is a little more colourful in his explanation.

Spurs fan Sammy sees McClaren’s appoinment as something of a strange one.
