Free agent Marouane Chamakh set to join Championship club

Neil Warnock is poised to immediately strengthen his Cardiff City squad with the impending signing of former Arsenal and Crystal Palace striker Marouane Chamakh, according to Wales Online. Ex-QPR winger Juniott Hoilett is closing in on a deal to join, as is Sol Bamba, previously of Leeds United.

After taking the job, Warnock admitted that the squad is short in some areas and has acted quickly to try and address those issues. With the transfer window obviously closed, he can only look towards the free agent market, and is closing in on three experienced signings. The addition of Chamakh is certainly the highest-profile name of the three.

The 32-year-old forward, who has over 60 caps for the Moroccan national team, as been without a club since Alan Pardew elected to release him from Palace at the end of last season. He has spent the summer and the early part of this season searching for a club. He did have a trial game with West Bromwich Albion.

Chamakh made a big name for himself in French football with Ligue 1, leading to Arsene Wenger to bring the player to the Premier League in 2010. He failed to live up to those heights during his time with the Gunners, and was sent out on loan to West Ham United in 2013. He would join the Eagles later in that year, however he only made 12 appearances last season, his last coming in February.

There is every chance that Chamakh, Hoilett and Bamba could be involved in Warnock’s first game in charge following the international break at home to local rivals Bristol City.
