Tuttosport reports that Newcastle United’s on loan winger Christian Atsu could leave the club in January to sign for Italian Serie A side Torino. The Ghanaian, who is contracted to Chelsea, is currently on a season-long loan at St James’ Park.
The 24-year-old, who has failed to make a competitive first-team appearance for the Blues, has already made four substitute appearances since Rafa Benitez swooped for the player on transfer deadline day. The Magpies have option to make the loan deal permanent at the end of the season.
Atsu has so far found it difficult to dislodge the likes of Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran in the side, which is restricting him to brief substitute appearances for now. This is even despite the injury to Rolando Aarons, which momentarily propelled Atsu up the pecking order in the short term.
Should Atsu make the move to Italy, he would link up with current England number one Joe Hart, who is on loan with the Turin-based club for the remainder of the campaign from Manchester City. They are managed by Siniša Mihajlović, who has previously managed clubs such as AC Milan, Fiorentina and the Serbian national side.
Speaking earlier this week, Benitez told The Chronicle that Atsu is a ‘good player’ but feels that he first needs to ‘know the Championship’ and to ‘understand the way we play’.
