Newport County sack Warren Feeney

Newport County manager Warren Feeney has been sacked following just one victory in 22 games.

Last night’s 1-0 defeat to Grimsby, put the Exiles at the foot of the table, picking up a mere six points from eight games.

To the 39 travelling fans who made the trip to Blundell Park, the news was expected with the Northern Irishman failing to acknowledge the fans who made the 480 mile round-trip.

He becomes the second sacking in the Football League, following Leyton Orient’s decision to let Andy Hessenthaler leave on Monday.

Feeney joined the Welsh club as an assistant to John Sheridan 11 months ago, and took over the full time role when Sheridan moved to Oldham in January.

In the summer the former Linfield man revamped the side, bringing in a whole new squad however the board felt Feeney isn’t the right man for the job on their survival hunt.

A charismatic manager for County, whose faced to FA fines since taking the role at Rodney Parade; and his memorable touchline rants will stay fresh in the minds of County supporters.

Andy Todd, assistant to Feeney, has also left the club, leaving James Bittner and Sean McCarthy at the helm for Saturday’s home clash against Stevenage.

The club has said,

“We would like to thank Warren for his service since joining the club back in October and wish him all the best for his future career.

“The Club is intending to make an appointment as soon as possible and will make an announcement in due course.”
