Blackburn Rovers manager Owen Coyle has revealed that recent signing Charlie Mulgrew is set for a few weeks on the sidelines with a calf injury. The former Celtic man made his debut in the weekend draw with Queens Park Rangers, but was forced off midway through the first half.
Coyle has elected to use the 30-year-old Scotland international as a holding midfield player and has looked assured in the role in the minutes he did manage to play at Loftus Road. He has since been scanned, meaning he is set to miss the next two games at the very least.
Former Houston Dynamo boss Coyle provided further details on the extent of Mulgrew’s problem and is backing him to return firing on all cylinders,
“It is a huge frustration because we saw during the period that Charlie was on the quality that he can bring to the team.
“He’s damaged his calf, and I think it is fair to say that he won’t be available for the next few games over the next couple of weeks, we’ll just have to wait and see what the diagnosis is.
“So we’ll just have to wait and see what the length of the period of recovery is and make sure when he comes in he is ready for a sustained period.”
Mulgrew saw his contract at Celtic expire over the summer and expressed a desire to leave the club for a new challenge. He soon linked up with a fellow Scot in Coyle, but will be disappointed to find himself injured so soon into his stint with his new club. Tonight, Blackburn travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United, with both sides situated in the Championship relegation places.
