Birmingham City: Midfielder reveals reason behind strong start

In discussion with the Birmingham Mail, midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld says that Birmingham City’s strong start to the season is largely because of the great team spirit that they have. Six games in and Gary Rowett’s Blues sit 4th in the Sky Bet Championship table, collecting 11 points in the process.

In total, six new players have entered the club over the course of the summer. Ryan Shotton’s loan from Derby was made permanent, Robert Tesche re-joined on a free, whilst Che Adams and Greg Stewart penned permanent moves from Sheffield United and Dundee respectively. In addition to that, Rowett added Lukas Jutkiewicz and Rhoys Wiggins on loan on transfer deadline day.

They haven’t spent as much money as most Championship sides in recent times, and Kieftenbeld believes it is their togetherness as to why they have started the new season is excellent form,

“It’s my second year in the Championship and there are a lot of clubs with a lot of money but it is also really competitive.

“If you have got a great team spirit and work really hard then you are really difficult to beat, which we showed against Norwich – and again on Saturday.

“We also showed a lot of quality on the ball at Fulham too. Those teams have got a big squad and a lot of players so they will be high in the league.

“The key is always the team spirit and team ethic – but you also have to be honest, if you have got really good players AND team spirit you will be at the top of the league, easy as that.

“But to be fair I think we have got a really good squad, we did some good signings this summer and close to the transfer window and we have showed in the last couple of games we need to we keep going.”

Dutchman Kieftenbeld is expected to be in the starting eleven once again this evening when they travel to Jaap Stam’s Reading. Kick off is at 8pm.
