From the stand – Peterborough United player reviews

It was another disappointing result for Peterborough United yesterday, as a 94th minute penalty saw them held at home for the second weekend running.

The performance from the team was impressive, with the exception of the last five minutes.

We take a look at player ratings from the game, and give our opinion on how they performed:

Luke McGee – The debutant keeper did nothing wrong and looked assured and confident throughout. There was nothing he could have done about the first goal, and the penalty was pure lottery. He was good with his feet, and his distribution could help Posh a lot in the coming weeks. He made important saves when he was called upon, especially late on to deny Thomas. RATING: 8.

Michael Smith – It’s been a busy week for Michael Smith. First of all, he was part of the Northern Ireland squad who drew 0-0 in the Czech Republic, and then he became a father. He was back to the Posh this weekend and it was like he’d never been away. Defensively he was solid, and he helped keep Thomas quiet throughout. He offered support going forward, and even supplied a couple of decent balls into the box. He was substituted after an hour. RATING: 7.

Jack Baldwin – It may not seem it because of the two goals they conceded, but Posh defended well for the majority of the game. Baldwin in particular made some crunching tackles to stop Port Vale attacks, and looked calm and assured in possession. RATING: 7.

Michael Bostwick – Like his central defensive partner, for the majority of the game he looked solid. He made a couple of important blocks to deny Port Vale, and most importantly he didn’t give a penalty away this week. He was booked in the second half, but didn’t deserve to be. RATING: 6.

Andrew Hughes – I do sympathise with Hughes, who was sent off in the penalty incident. In his defence, Port Vale put the ball in the net anyway, so he did take one for the team in putting his faith in Luke McGee. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, but on another day it could have won Posh three points. He did miss a great opportunity early in the second half however. RATING: 6.

Chris Forrester – The Posh captain was given a lot more space against Port Vale than he was in the Swindon game, and this allowed him to demonstrate his passing capabilities. He controlled the game in midfield, and contributed defensively when called upon. His shot shortly after Moncur’s equaliser almost put the Posh ahead. RATING: 8.

Jermaine Anderson – It’s a shame for the midfielder that he was substituted just before half time after picking up an injury, as he was having a good game. He always looked to go forward, and was linking up well with Moncur ahead of him. He worked hard defensively as well, tracking back to deny what would have been a fantastic chance for the visitors. RATING: 6.

Marcus Maddison – It certainly wasn’t his best game for Posh, yet Maddison still registered an assist. He gave the ball away far more than often, and didn’t seem willing to take on his fullback. He was substituted after an hour, which shows how poor he was on the day. RATING: 6.

George Moncur – Moncur was without a doubt Posh’s man of the match. He scored two goals, should have had an assist, and just shone brighter than any other player in blue. He looked dangerous every time he picked up the ball and fully deserved his two goals on his full debut for the Posh. RATING: 9.

Gwion Edwards – It was one of Edwards’ quieter games, but he still looked dangerous when he got the ball. He worked hard down the left, both going forward and defensively. He put a superb cross in for Nichols, as well as having a guilt edge chance himself blocked by a Port Vale defender. RATING: 7.

Tom Nichols – The game began well for Nichols, who showed some excellent link up play with Moncur, but it gradually got worse. He missed two guilt edge opportunities in the second half, much to the annoyance of the Posh faithful. The positive is that he’s getting the chances and finding himself in these positions, he just needs to find the back of the net. RATING: 5.
