Wigan boss on Sheffield Wednesday clash – “It’s a massive game”.

Wigan boss Gary Caldwell is eager for his side to bounce back from consecutive defeats, with The Latics set to face promotion-contenders Sheffield Wednesday this weekend at Hillsborough.

Following on from dismal league defeats at the hands of Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers, Latics boss Gary Caldwell is hoping his squad can spring out of the international break guns-a-blazing, starting with a tough road fixture against highly-touted promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Speaking to Wigan’s official club website, Caldwell highlighted the importance for his side to cut down on crucial errors that have plagued The Latics so far if they wish to secure victory at Hillsborough on Saturday,

“What we’ve learned is that you can’t make small errors in the fine details of games because they will cost you” Caldwell commented.

“The results have been nowhere near good enough and we have to do something about that quickly.”

Despite a slow start to the season for Carlos Carvahal’s Owls, Caldwell expects a fierce test from Wednesday, whom will be desperate to climb the table in the hopes of ultimately avenging their narrow playoff final loss to Hull City to end last campaign,

“They were right up there last year and got to the play-off final, so they’ll be hungry to put that defeat right this season.

“They’ve got lots of individuals who could hurt us on the day, so again we’ll have to be at our best.”

A victory for Wigan over the Yorkshire outfit would see The Latics leapfrog Wednesday in the league table, giving extra incentive for Caldwell’s men to bag a result in front of a packed crowd on Saturday.

The Latics headed into the two week long international break following a bitterly disappointing home defeat at the hands of QPR, however Caldwell believes the time off provided him with the opportunity to improve his side, in addition to settling in new arrivals to the club in the transfer window,

“If used correctly the international break can be very beneficial for us.

“We had a friendly against Burnley at the training ground and we’ve had some 11v11s amongst ourselves at the DW Stadium, so we’ve managed to get a lot of work in.”

A first away win of the season for Caldwell’s Wigan could well kick-start The Latics’ Championship campaign, as the Lancashire outfit look to build on their dominant surge to the 2015/16 League One title.
