Former Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez is closing in on a comeback to football in the Italian Serie A, according to Tutto Mercato Web. Following his release by Deportivo over the summer, Chievo Verona and Cagliari are considering making a move for the former Norwich City loanee.
The 33-year-old Argentinian departed St James’ Park in somewhat distasteful circumstances. During his time with the club, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and has since gone on to thankfully make a full recovery. He was released at the end of the 2014/15 season by then manager John Carver. Gutierrez, who has 22 caps for the Argentinian national team, then attempted to sue the club for disability discrimination.
At the start of last season he linked up with La Liga side Deportivo. He made a total of 17 appearances for the club, 12 of those as a substitute. He would make appearances against the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid during his stay at Riazor.
However it looks as though he is closing in on a return and seemingly has two clubs fighting over his signature. During his time on Tyneside, Gutierrez played over 170 times for the Magpies and was part of Chris Hughton’s squad which won promotion out of the Championship by winning the league title in 2010.
