Reading scouting York City striker

Reading are scouting York City’s Aidan Connolly and could make a move for him according to a report from the Reading Chronicle.

The Royals were unable to bring in a forward this summer, a situation exacerbated by the fact Deniss Rakels will be out for five months after he suffered a broken ankle. They had been linked with plenty of players with Asamoah Gyan, Gabby Agbonlahor, Lewis Grabban and Valeri Bojinov all being rumoured to be joining at Reading at some point during transfer deadline day though they were unable to complete a deal for any of them.

And while they would only be able to bring in a striker if he was free agent due to emergency loans being banned this season, Reading are still looking out to sign a new forward even if he could only join in January. And the man they have been looking at is Connolly.

The Royals sent scouts out to take a look at Connolly in York’s match against Solihull Moors and they certainly won’t have been put off of signing him after he scored two in the 4-0 victory. There may be some questions whether he can step up to the Sky Bet Championship but considering Andre Gray was one of the last few players to go from non-league to the second tier of the EFL, Reading would certainly be hopeful that he could.

It will be tough though for Reading to sign Connolly as York are unwilling to sell with their head coach Jackie McNamara sending them a hands off warning during a recent press conference.
