Ex-Ajax & Milan left back agrees personal terms at Sheff Wed

The Sheffield Star reports that Sheffield Wednesday are set to complete the signing of free agent defender Urby Emanuelson. The Dutch left back has agreed personal terms with the Championship club and is set to have a medical later today (Monday).

The 30-year-old is without a club following his departure from Hellas Verona at the end of last season. They were relegated from Serie A, with the former Ajax youngster making just 11 appearances for the club.

Although the transfer window has shut, clubs are able to add free agents to their squad outside of the window, assuming that those players were without a club once the deadline actually passed.

Emanuelson certainly possesses a fine footballing CV if his previous clubs are anything to go by. As mentioned, he began his career with Dutch giants Ajax after coming through the ranks. He would win six domestic honours with the club, including three Eredivisie titles. His exploits in Holland then earned him a move to AC Milan and he was part of the squad which won the Serie A title in 2011. Spells at Fulham, Roma, Atalanta and most recently Hellas Verona followed.

Carlos Carvalhal had been particularly keen to sign up some defensive cover at left back. They did try to sign both Joe Bennett and Morgan Fox prior to the deadline, but were unsuccessful. Bennett joined Cardiff and Fox remained at Charlton after three bids were rejected. Emanuelson will provide cover for Czech Republic international Daniel Pudil.

For any Owls fans not too aware of Emanuelson’s exploits, then the video below will provide a little teaser!
