Fernando Forestieri says Sheffield Wednesday must play with heart

Sheffield Wednesday’s Fernando Forestieri has said to the club website that they must play with heart after they return from the international break.

The Owls have had a mediocre start to the season as they haven’t won a game since their opening day success over Aston Villa. They did end August on a good note after Sam Hutchinson headed in a late equaliser to earn Wednesday a point against Brentford.

But this isn’t anywhere near where Wednesday wanted to be at this point of the season after targeting promotion at the start of the season and for better or for worse, Forestieri has been attracting plenty of attention because of it. He put in a transfer request to try and force a move away from Hillsborough in August and even refused to travel with the rest of the squad for the match against Norwich City. He would eventually withdraw his request and get back to playing for Wednesday, but some fans have theorised that this saga affected the mentality of the squad and caused the drop in form.

But Forestieri is now concentrating on getting Wednesday back to top form after the international break as he said ahead of their match against Wigan Athletic: “When we play at home in front of our fans it is always positive and I hope we can win. We will play with the heart for them.

“We have two home games very close by and we will be doing our very best. But we must not think too far ahead, and first we concentrate completely on Wigan.

“We will fight to the end, just like we did at Brentford and we got the reward. It was fantastic to see the ball go in, it doesn’t matter who scores, it just matters that we get the good results.”
