Midfielder handed Newcastle lifeline after failing to leave

Chronicle Live reports that Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote is set to resume training with the club after failing to agree a transfer away from St James’ Park on Deadline Day. Contract talks with Galatasaray broke down, but Rafa Benitez is prepared to give the player the chance to impress.

The Ivory Coast international, who has yet to make an appear for the Magpies this season so far, had also been linked with a move to Ligue 1 side Lorient, as well as a transfer to the megabucks Qatar Stars League. A move to Qatar is still possible, but he is likely to remain with the Sky Bet Championship club until January at the very least.

There were reports that the reason for the 30-year-old’s proposed move to Galatasaray fell through because of a failed medical. However this has seemingly confused everyone at Newcastle as he is widely believed to be among the fitter players in the squad. Nevertheless, Benitez could utilise the player in the coming weeks and months, although he does have big competition for places in the midfield position.

Following the international break, Newcastle face Nigel Pearson’s Derby County and Tiote will be available for selection in that game. It remains to be seen if he can suddenly break ahead of the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Jack Colback in Benitez’s preferred ranking.
