Championship side Huddersfield Town defeated Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly game at the Premier League sides Melwood training ground. It was a strong Liverpool side which contained the likes of James Milner, Joel Matip, Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings.
Goals from former Southend United man Jack Payne and Chelsea loanee Kasey Palmer ensured that David Wagner’s Terriers came from behind to defeat their higher league opponents. The two clubs met in pre-season at the John Smith’s Stadium, where Klopp’s red emerged as 2-0 victors.
The game was arranged to give minutes to those players that are not away with their countries on international duty and to generally maintain their levels of fitness whilst the top two leagues in English football take a two week break. Wagner and Klopp are close friends and worked together during their time at Borussia Dortmund.
Liverpool, who also fielded Lucas Leiva, Alberto Moreno and Alex Manninger, took the lead shortly after half time when Ovie Ejaria scored from close range after some fine play by regular starter Firmino. Payne would equalise shortly afterwards after being send through one-on-one with former Arsenal goalie Manninger and finishing confidently. The Championship side sealed the win with ten minutes left on the clock as Palmer slotted home from inside the box after some high pressing led to the chance on goal.
