Sheffield United have tabled a second bid for Millwall centre-back Byron Webster, according to the Sheffield Star.
The Blades have continued their relentless pursuit of the 29-year-old, submitting a new and improved bid in the hopes they can secure their man prior to the transfer window slamming shut.
United boss Chris Wilder has been eager to bolster his squad’s defensive depth after a torrid start to the 2016/17 League One campaign, in which The Blades have conceded eight goals in their opening five league games.
Attempting to address their defensive deficiencies, the Yorkshire outfit tabled a £250,000 bid for veteran Millwall centre-back Webster last week, but the offer was firmly rebuffed by Lions boss Neil Harris.
However, according to the Sheffield Star, The Blades have tabled an improved offer in the region of £500,000 in an attempt to pry Webster away from Millwall before the 11PM Wednesday transfer deadline.
Webster made his professional league debut with then Championship side Doncaster Rovers in 2009, before completing stints at Hereford United and Northampton Town up until a July 2012 switch to Yeovil Town. The Englishman soon became an integral feature of the Yeovil team that surged to the Championship in 2013, making 98 total appearances before moving to Millwall in June 2014.
Despite initially failing to make an impact at The Den, Webster soon found himself featuring regularly, making 40 appearances throughout the 2015-16 League One campaign in which Millwall narrowly missed out on promotion after slumping to defeat against Barnsley at Wembley.
Landing Webster’s signature would boost The Blades’ chances of mounting a push up the table towards the League One playoff positions, as the club hope to improve on a relatively disappointing mid-table finish last season.
