Barnsley swoop to seal loan deal for in-demand Wigan midfielder

Barnsley have landed the signature of Wigan Athletic midfielder Sam Morsy on a season-long loan deal.

The Tykes successfully fought off interest from numerous clubs, including League One duo Sheffield United and Scunthorpe, to acquire the Egyptian’s services.

Despite featuring regularly for Wigan during the second half of The Latics’ dominant surge to the 2015/16 League One title, Morsy has failed to make an impact for the Lancashire side upon promotion to the Championship. Having failed to make an appearance under Wigan boss Gary Caldwell this season, Morsy has been given the green light to complete his switch to Oakwell.

Although the Egyptian doesn’t appear to be a part of Wigan’s immediate plans, The Latics have previously turned down bids from numerous clubs hoping to permanently nab Morsy’s signature, including Sheffield United.

Morsy began his professional career in 2009 with Port Vale, making 78 appearances before completing a move to Chesterfield in 2013. The 24-year-old soon became an integral player for the Spireites, becoming club captain and bagging the 2013/14 Player of the Season award before sealing a January 2016 switch to Wigan.

In total, Morsy has made 16 appearances for Wigan, whilst bagging his only goal in The Latics’ 4-1 thrashing of Swindon Town on 25 March 2016.

Penning Morsy’s signature boosts Barnsley’s midfield depth, as the newly-promoted Tykes look to build on an impressive start to the 2016/17 Championship campaign.
