Ipswich £1million striker bid rejected by Championship rivals

East Anglian Daily Times reports that Ipswich Town have had an offer turned down for Barnsley striker Marley Watkins. Mick McCarthy still remains hopeful of snapping up another striker before the transfer window closes tonight.

The Tractor Boys put £1million forward to their Championship rivals to prize Watkins away from Oakwell, however the versatile forward looks likely to be staying put. He has enjoyed a strong start to the new season.

25-year-old Watkins has netted twice, which included a strike against Ipswich on the opening day of the season. McCarthy sealed a deal for journeyman striker Leon Best yesterday and had hoped Watkins would be his second striker signing in as many days.

However Barnsley are clearly keen on keeping their players rather than losing any more before the deadline later tonight. Key centre back Alfie Mawson has moved to Premier League side Swansea City.

Prior to his time with Barnsley, Watkins played in Scotland with Inverness Caledonian Thistle, which included him scoring in a cup final against Falkirk. He also played in English non-league football with both Bath City and Hereford. Ipswich are to now move onto other targets, but any talk of Derby striker Darren Bent returning to the club appear to be wide of the mark at this stage.
