Barnsley prepare for life without Mawson by making move for QPR defender

Barnsley have started to prepare for life without Alfie Mawson as they look to make a move for QPR’s Cole Kpekawa according to a report from West London Sport.

Mawson looks like he will be leaving Oakwell in the next few days after a fee was agreed with Premier League team Swansea City and now Barnsley are being forced to look for a replacement to make sure they don’t miss the Brentford defender that badly when he eventually departs.

And the man they are currently targeting is Kpekawa, a 20-year-old defender from QPR. After becoming a regular for the R’s towards the end of last season, new signings have been brought into Loftus Road and have overtaken him on the pecking order. This means that Kpekawa is unlikely to get first team action this season and it appears that the West London side are willing to loan him out to make sure that he gets some time on the pitch this season.

And with Barnsley set to lose Mawson, they believe that bringing in another young defender like Kpekawa will be a suitable replacement. While it may not be favourable that it would only been a loan deal rather than a permanent transfer, it would at least be someone who could fill in a hole in the team that it set to be opened.

While Kpekawa has come through the QPR academy, he has gone on loan to several clubs such as Colchester United, Portsmouth and Leyton Orient in order to gain more first team experience.
