Newcastle & Villa lodge £5million bid for Spurs defender

The Daily Mail reports that both Aston Villa and Newcastle United have submitted £5million bids to sign Tottenham Hotspur right back DeAndre Yedlin. Earlier today, Villa completed the signing of Ritchie De Laet from Leicester City, so perhaps Newcastle are the frontrunners for the USA international.

The 23-year-old is said to be keen on exiting Spurs after failing to establish himself in the first team. He has found it hard to dislodge England international Kyle Walker from the right back berth. He has had spells away on loan with Seattle Sounders and Sunderland in recent times.

With the future of Magpies right back Daryl Janmaat somewhat unclear, Rafa Benitez is now actively seeking a replacement. The Dutchman was left out of the Newcastle squad for their weekend victory at Bristol City. West Ham United and Napoli are said to be keen on luring the player away from St James’ Park.

Jesus Gamez does provide cover in this area should Janmaat depart, but he has yet to feature since completing his summer move from Atletico Madrid.

The signing of De Laet may not necessarily rule Villa out of the running for Yedlin. That is if De Laet is primarily used at a left back ahead of Ally Cissokho and Jordan Amavi. However the likelihood is that he’ll play at right back.

Since moving to Tottenham in 2014, Yedlin has made just one Premier League substitute appearance for the White Hart Lane club. He impressed many in his Sunderland loan spell last season, with the Championship duo bidding £5million for the player.
