Newcastle United: Key defender to leave, replacement set to join

Craig Hope, the North East Football Correspondent for the Daily Mail, reports that Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat has told his close friends that he is to leave St James’ Park. The Chronicle understands that they have identified his replacement in the form of Tottenham Hotspur’s DeAndre Yedlin.

Earlier today we covered the story that the Magpies are said to have lodged a £5million bid for the United States international. Aston Villa were also in the running for the 23-year-old, but they have since signed Ritchie De Laet, who plays in a similar position.

Dutchman Janmaat has been with the club since signing in July 2014 for £5million from Eredivisie side Feyenoord. He was left out of the matchday squad for their recent Championship victory at Bristol City, fueling speculation that he is to exit the final. Several clubs have been linked with the player, such as Watford and West Ham United according to the Daily Mail. He has started over 70 games for the club.

Seattle-born Yedlin impressed in a local spell at Newcastle’s arch-rivals Sunderland in the Premier League last season. He wasn’t offered a permanent deal and he has accepted defeat in his quest to break into the Spurs side. He is behind the likes of Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier in the pecking order.

The extremely pacey full back is also keen on winning back his place in Jurgen Klinsmann’s United States squad. Vurnon Anita, who is normally a midfielder but is versatile, played at right back in the win over Bristol City, but Yedlin will now be hoping to go straight into the side. The Chronicle suggests that deal could be completed before the end of this week.
