Sheff Wed consider re-signing defender to ease centre back shortage

The Sheffield Star reports how Sheffield Wednesday are lining up a loan move to former defender Vincent Sasso. The Owls are currently suffering from a centre back shortage and Carlos Carvalhal is looking to strengthen this position in the coming days.

Glenn Loovens and Tom Lees, the first choice centre back pairing, both missed Tuesday night’s defeat at Burton Albion through injury. Sam Hutchinson is fit but has been injury prone in recent years. Jose Semedo, who is usually a midfielder, has also filled in this position but he too picked up an injury at the Pirelli Stadium.

Carvalhal is now looking towards 25-year-old Sasso, who plays for Braga in the Primeira Liga but isn’t believed to feature in the plans of head coach Jose Peseiro. The Frenchman spent time at Hillsborough last season on loan, playing a total of 19 times for the club. In addition to a centre back, Sheff Wed are planning to recruit another left back and left winger as well.

The Owls are also said to be monitoring the situation of Preston North End centre back Tom Clarke. They would also face competition with Blackburn Rovers should they wish to prize the defender away from Deepdale.
