Blackburn & Sheff Wed eye move for rival defender

The Daily Mail understands that Preston North End captain and defender Tom Clarke is a transfer target for both Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers. The 28-year-old has played over 100 games for the club since joining in 2013.

The source reports that his team at Deepdale could be coming to an end. The former Huddersfield Town has had his injury problems in recent times, however Carlos Carvalhal and Owen Coyle both believe he would be a major asset to their squads. Both are looking to complete a deal before the transfer window closes in a few weeks time.

To date, the centre back has started 121 league games for the Lilywhites. He has twice won promotion in his career, both coming via the League One Play-Offs with Huddersfield and then Preston more recently.

There is certainly a need for Sheff Wed to add another centre back. Tom Lees missed Tuesday’s defeat at Burton Albion with injury, whilst Glenn Loovens hasn’t featured this season so far, although he is set to return. Blackburn recently added Gordon Greer on a free transfer to partner Shane Duffy at the back. However they are yet to keep a clean sheet so far this season so Coyle is keen on adding to his defensive unit. That being said, Simon Grayson would probably like to keep the player at Deepdale. Time will tell on that front.
