Newcastle striker turns down rival clubs to join Shrewsbury Town on loan

Shrewsbury Town have signed Ivan Toney on loan from Newcastle United until January as confirmed by the club website.

The 20-year-old striker spent part of last season on loan with Barnsley, helping them to get promotion from Sky Bet League One via the play offs and with the coaching staff at Newcastle feeling he needs more playing time if he wants to get into their first team, he’s been shipped out on loan again.

Many League One teams were interested in signing Toney, but it is Shrewsbury who have won the race and now the forward will be staying at the Greenhous Meadow until the New Year.

This move will throw up an interesting match. For the first time in his career, he will be facing Northampton Town, the team he started with. It was at the Sixfields Stadium where he came to the attention of many top clubs and it was because of his form there he was signed up by Newcastle. There were some reports Northampton were trying to sign Toney but instead he will be forced to put his former team to the sword this season.

But that won’t be on Toney’s mind right now as he aims to push Shrewsbury up the League One table.
