Almen Abdi left stunned by Sheffield Wednesday atmosphere

Sheffield Wednesday’s Almen Abdi has said to the Sheffield Star how much he loved the atmosphere as the team edged a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.

There as a lot of anticipation around this match for Wednesday fans after suffering heartbreak at Wembley at the end of last season. That excitement only grew when it was revealed that they would be facing promotion rivals Aston Villa and that ti would be televised on Sky Sports.

And so over 30,000 fans packed into Hillsborough, with 5K making the trip from Birmingham to support Villa after their own heartbreak last season, and they certainly made some noise as they tried to support their team.

And it ended up being an entertaining game as both sides hoped to take the front foot. Wednesday had a lot of the ball but it was Villa who came closest to scoring, with Ashley Westwood flashing some dangerous volleys wide.

But in the end it was Wednesday who would raise the roof after Fernando Forestieri raced onto a poor clearance from Pierluigi Gollini and was able to continue where he left off last season and smash the ball past the Italian.

And after experiencing that famous Hillsborough atmosphere for the first time, new signing Abdi was amazed. He said: “I was told it’s brilliant here and it really was. I really enjoyed it, especially when we scored, also in the beginning when they sing – I still have to learn the song. It was fantastic.”

“It was great, it’s nice to start with a win. It was a fantastic atmosphere, I really enjoyed the game, it was a tough match but finally we got the win, against a good Aston Villa side.”
