Defender confirmed to have Leeds captaincy

Leeds United have confirmed that experienced defender Sol Bamba is to continue his role as captain for the 2016-17 English Football League campaign.

Bamba joined Leeds initially on-loan from Palermo in early January 2015, before signing permanently at Elland Road in June 2015 with last season being his first season as a bona fide Leeds player.

Since signing a year ago, the central defender has captained the side and has made 49 appearances for the Championship side, although he faces fierce competition from the likes of Liam Cooper and Kyle Bartley

The news was confirmed by Leeds boss Gary Monk in a press conference, with Monk stating he has “no reason” to change the captaincy.

“Sol is obviously captain from last season and I think he does very well with that role so I see no reason to change it.

“But I also have a group of ‘leaders’ that work from within on a daily basis. But of course Sol was the captain from last year and I see no reason to change that. I think he does very well at that job and has a good relationship with the group which is important as a captain, so that’s what it will be from the start of the season.”

The news that Bamba, a former PSG youngster, would retain the armband spread mixed emotions through Leeds fans. Some fans are saying that it is an excellent choice for Bamba to retain the captaincy. However, some fans think that if the Whites are to sign another centre-back, then Bamba could be on the bench.  In this scenario, there are some Leeds supporters saying that Swiss right-back Gaetano Beradi would have been a better choice.

Leeds United kick-off their Championship campaign against QPR at Loftus Road on Sunday afternoon.
