Newcastle close to deal for Hull midfielder

Newcastle United are close to signing Hull City midfielder Mohamed Diame, according to The Mirror.

It is understood that Newcastle met the midfielder’s release clause and are now free to open talks with Diame over a move back down into the Championship.

The move may come as a surprise to many Hull fans, as Diame reportedly said last season that he wants to play Premier League football once again.  The midfielder also made the point that he would consider leaving Hull if they were not promoted last season.

However Hull are a club almost in crisis at the moment, after the departure of Steve Bruce last month.  Hull do not currently have a manager, with the new season starting in less than two weeks time.  With several new signings probably needed for Hull to be strong enough to survive, the future is looking bleak for the club.

Signing for Newcastle will mean a high probability of playing Premier League football next season for Diame, with many pundits predicting Newcastle to earn promotion with ease.

From Hull’s perspective, Diame is in the last year of his contract, meaning they could lose the midfielder for free next summer if they do not sell this season.

Newcastle are likely to sell midfielders Moussa Sissoko, Cheick Tiote and Florian Thauvin this summer, and will need to bring in new faces such as Diame to bolster their squad.
