Man Utd hand trial to Oldham trialist

The Manchester Evening News has revealed that Curacao international Liandro Martis, who has been on trial with Oldham Athletic in pre-season, has now been handed a trial with Barclays Premier League giants Manchester United. Champions Leicester City are also said to be interested in the forward.

The 20-year-old, who has previously played in Holland for Feyenoord and Willem II, has also been offered a contract by the Latics. He impressed during in pre-season with the Sky Bet League One club, scoring a fine goal in the friendly clash with Championship side Preston North End.

The player is understandably keeping his options open and won’t commit to signing a contract with Oldham, especially with Leicester and especially Manchester United taking a big interest in the youngster. The man himself has spoken on this honour, saying he is looking forward to impressing the Old Trafford coaching staff,

“I went into Leicester for a day and felt comfortable and got an offer. Then I went into Manchester United for a week and received good feedback from Warren Joyce and could have earned a deal had I waited, but I just want to get my career started.

“I am confident in my ability. I’ve played a number of games to obtain fitness and have done well. I played against League Two Crewe and scored and laid on an assist and then played in a game with Tranmere where I help set up a number of goals before I went Oldham and scored against a championship Preston. Oldham have offered me a deal and we have been in negotiations for two weeks.

“I am nearing a decision on my future and I want to make the right decision for the next stage of my career.”

Martis, who turns 21 in November, is clearly someone destined for a bright future in the game. The question is that is he good enough to earn himself a contract with the 20-time top flight victors.
