Gillingham midfielder faces lengthy time out following pre-season injury

Gillingham lost their final pre-season game 2-0 to Leyton Orient, although the result was largely overshadowed by a horrible injury sustained by Lee Martin which led to the fixture being abandoned.

The Gills’ summer signing was introduced to the game at the half-time interval however, following a nasty injury, the match officials were forced to abandon after 83 minutes.

“It’s not good news. From the physio’s assessment of it, it looks like a broken or dislocated ankle.” Said Gills manager Justin Edinburgh. “It’s a bad injury, but it’s been put back in place now and he’s in the ambulance and is going off to the hospital.

“Our thoughts are with Lee, I know that his mum and dad were here today watching. We hope that he makes a quick recovery.”

Leyton Orient undeservedly won their final pre-season game ahead of the 2016-17 English Football League campaign thanks to first-half goals from Jordan Bowery and a Jay Simpson spot-kick.

The visitors constantly bombarded the O’s with efforts on goal, But the home side broke the deadlock against the run of play on 32 minutes. Former Colchester United winger Gavin Massey expertly found Bowery who’s scuffed shot found it’s way in.

Ryan Jackson was adjudged to have fouled Harry Cornick in the box, allowing Simpson to fire home the home side’s second goal.

With 14 minutes of the second-half remaining Martin picked up an injury when attempting to cross into the box. The officials allowed the physios eight minutes to aid the midfielder, however on 83 minutes both managers mutually agreed to terminate the fixture.
