Aston Villa midfielder set for Premier League move

Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed that Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye is set to join Everton, according to Sky Sports.

Earlier this week, it became public news that Everton had activated Gueye’s £7.1M release clause, and terms were now being agreed.

Amid reports of interest from other clubs, Di Matteo confirmed this but also made it clear that the club have only received an official bid from Everton. He said: “There are other clubs interested, that’s right, but the only official bid so far has been from Everton.”

Di Matteo admitted that he did not look to sell Gueye, and that the imminent departure of the Senegal international is out of his control.

“There’s not much I can do because he had a clause in his contract and that’s something I inherited and my hands are tied. We will be losing him.

“We’re not a club looking to sell. We don’t have to, we don’t need to.”

Gueye has only been at Aston Villa for one year, which saw the relegation of the club into the Championship. The 26-year old made a total of 35 league appearances last season, but failed to score. Before joining Villa, the defensive-minded midfielder had made 134 league appearances at Lille in Ligue 1, scoring 5 times.

Once personal terms have been agreed, and a medical has been completed, then the striker will be on a £45,000-a-week contract at his new Merseyside club.
