Oldham continue revamp as Lee Turnbull appointed Head of Recruitment

Having lost a flood of players as well as a manager over the past few months, Oldham Athletic fans have been desperate for their club to regroup and steady the ship ahead of a potentially tricky season.

The club have signed an experienced coaching team with Sean O’Driscoll a high profile coup alongside Steve Robinson and Ian Baraclough, but have added transfer market nous to the backroom staff as Lee Turnbull has been recruited as Head of Recruitment.

As announced on the club website, Turnbull will be responsible for player recruitment as well as working alongside the manager. He will finalise signings and also scout and analyse the opposition before games.

With over 30 years of experience in the game, Turnbull explained to the club that he is thrilled to still be involved in football. Turnbull’s experience includes spells in the lower leagues at Chesterfield and two spells at Doncaster Rovers. Having managed Barrow from 2003-2005, Turnbull moved upstairs to become Chief Scout at Scunthorpe United before following Nigel Adkins to Sheffield United a year ago.

His move to the Latics comes at a time of upheaval at Boundary Park concerning coaching staff and players all needing to be replaced as the club fought off a winding up order at the end of June.

Latics fans will be hoping that Turnbull can form a positive working relationship with head coach Steve Robinson and his team as they work together to bring in new signings ahead of the new season.

According to the club website, Turnbull explained: “The club is very forward thinking and ambitious and that’s what attracted me here.”

Oldham had a strong resurgence under former manager John Sheridan last season as they climbed out of the relegation zone to finish 17th and eight points clear before his departure to Notts County after five months in charge. Former Motherwell and Northern Ireland assistant manager Steve Robinson was appointed in early July as Oldham gear up for a 2oth consecutive season in League One.
