Manchester United defender close to joining Reading

Manchester United defender Tyler Blackett is close to joining Championship side Reading after being deemed surplus to requirements, according to The Sun.

Blackett has been with Manchester United since 2002 but it looks as though he could be set to leave the club this summer, with new boss Jose Mourinho making changes to the squad.

The defender, 22, had loan spells with Blackpool and Birmingham City in 2013 and 2014, playing a handful of games for each club as he gained first-team experience.

Blackett’s big chance came in the 2014-15 pre-season however, when Louis Van Gaal played the centre back in a 3-5-2 formation.  Due to injuries, Blackett made his competitive debut for Manchester United against Swansea City in August 2014.

Blackett went on to make a further ten Premier League appearances before falling out of favour and being loaned out to Celtic the following season.  After making only three league appearances with the Scottish Champions, it looks as though Blackett will be playing Championship football next season.

Current Reading manager Jaap Stam has good connections at Manchester United following a successful spell with the club at the turn of the century.  This could prove an advantage when looking to sign the defender.

Mourinho has already allowed fellow youth defender Guillermo Varela to join Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan and Blackett looks to be following the right-back out the door.
