Oldham complete trio of signings

Oldham under new boss Steve Robinson have completed the signings of trio Billy Mckay, Marc Klok and Ryan Flynn.

New Oldham boss Steve Robinson will have been eager to bolster his squad’s depth with the new League One season fast approaching, as only 15 first team players were registered with the club prior to the Northern Irishman’s hiring at Boundary Park last week.

After only six days at the helm, Robinson has already successfully boosted the numbers and quality in his squad, with the club’s official website announcing Oldham had finalised deals to acquire three new players.

The first of which was former Ross County defensive midfielder Marc Klok, whom had most recently spent a two year period with Bulgarian first division side Cherno More before being released. The 23-year-old Dutchman however has returned to the UK, making the switch to Oldham in the hopes of reigniting his career on the UK professional footballing stage.

Secondly signed was former Sheffield United midfielder Ryan Flynn. Flynn began his professional career with Liverpool, before ultimately landing with The Blades in 2011. In five seasons with the Yorkshire club, Flynn made 194 appearances, bagging 19 goals, most notably scoring for The Blades in their thumping 3-0 victory over Oldham last season on 12th March. Upon the expiration of his contract at Bramall Lane, Flynn left the club, and has decided to make the switch across the Pennines to Boundary Park.

Thirdly, Oldham secured the signature of Wigan Athletic striker Billy Mckay on a season-long loan deal. Similarly to both Klok and Flynn, Mckay has a background in Scottish football, rising to prominence with Inverness CT before moving south in a January 2014 switch to Wigan.

However, Mckay ultimately failed to make an impact at the DW Stadium, resulting in the Northern Irishman returning to Scotland on loan, with Dundee United for the 2015-16 season. Despite bagging 11 goals in 25 appearances, Mckay’s exploits weren’t enough to prevent Dundee United from dropping to the Scottish Championship.

After securing a 17th place finish in the third division last season, Robinson will be looking to recruit further reinforcements in order to build a squad able to fend off the looming threat of relegation in the coming season.
