Permanent League One move for Man Utd midfielder

League One side Oxford United have swooped for Manchester United midfielder Joe Rothwell. The 21-year-old makes the move to the Kassam Stadium on a two-year contract from Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils.

Rothwell was part of the Under-21 side which won the league with the Premier League giants. He never made a first-team appearance during his time at Old Trafford.

Although he failed to appear for the Reds, he did appear for another red team in the form of Barnsley last season. He played seven times whilst on loan at Oakwell in the first part of the season. In the year before, he played three times on loan for Blackpool.

Oxford, who have also signed Chris Maguire on a permanent deal, will now welcome Rothwell to their Spanish training camp.

Speaking on the news of Rothwell’s signing, manager Michael Appleton feels he has acquired an exciting signing for the newly promoted club,

“Joe is a really talented lad who we believe has a very bright future.

“He has played for all of the England age group teams and has been around the first team at Old Trafford. He can play midfield or slightly further forward and he now gets a chance to get a run of games together and truly show what he can do.”
