Leeds United: defender transfer unlikely – Hay

Leeds United have been on something of a transfer spree of late, signing six players for next season. There was a rumour that it was to soon be seven, with Joel Ekstrand the purported man incoming. However, according to Phil Hay on Twitter (below), this may not be the case.

Ekstrand, a two-cap Sweden international, last played competitively for the Hornets in March 2015, a game where he suffered a cruciate knee injury against Ipswich. The severity of the injury has meant that he missed all of Watford’s Premier League campaign, being released at the end of the season just gone.

With such a grave injury, it is understandable why Leeds United would not be willing to essentially take a risk that Ekstrand would not suffer further recurrences.

The impending non-arrival, could there ever be such a thing, of Joel Ekstrand means that Leeds United are currently only served by three dedicated central defenders with what can be considered first-team experience.

Last season’s club captain Sol Bamba is one, as is fellow Leeds United defender from last season Liam Cooper – a player said by some to be drawing Premier League attention.

The Whites have brought in Swansea’s Kyle Bartley on a season-long loan, but even that only gives Leeds the choice of three centre-backs. Many observers were expecting that Ekstrand’s arrival would bring in a fourth central defender; it still remains to be seen whether this is United’s intention.
