Leeds ex-Premier League defender deal still alive

BBC Sport Journalist Adam Pope reports that Leeds United’s quest to sign former Watford defender Joel Ekstrand is not dead. The players’ agent has confirmed that they are still in talks with Massimo Cellino over completing a deal.

The 27-year-old Swede was expected to be named the latest signing of the Garry Monk era at Leeds United. However the Yorkshire Evening Post reported that the deal was all but dead as the club had doubts over injuries.

Nevertheless, Martin Dahlin, Ekstrand’s agent, has suggested that they remain in dialogue with Leeds representatives over a transfer for his free agent client. He also says that a ‘independent London specialist’ has confirmed that Ekstrand has no long-standing knee damage.

So far this summer, ex-Swansea City boss Monk has signed six new players to his Elland Road roster. There remains a possibility that Ekstrand could become his latest. Phil Hay, the chief football writer at the Yorkshire Evening Post, suggests that the Championship club could offer the ex-Udinese defender a pay-as-you-play contract. This way the player could prove his fitness.

Ekstrand suffered a anterior cruciate ligament injury in March 2015, and that has hampered his chances of finding himself a new club. Several have reservations about his fitness, which is understandable. Last week the deal seemed as good as complete, and then all of a sudden it collapses. Now it is alive again.
