Ajax Cape Town confirm ‘keeper has joined Reading

Ajax Cape Town assistant manager Mich D’Avray has confirmed that Finnish goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola is having a medical at Reading.

Jaakkola was nominated as the PSL (Premier Soccer League) Goalkeeper of the Season last year and despite signing a one year contract extension just recently, appears to be on his way to Reading.

“As we speak Anssi is in England having a medical for Reading. I don’t believe the deal has been finalised but I don’t foresee any hiccups in him joining,” D’Avray said.

“It’s a good move for him. He’s done well for the club, he’s got aspirations, I think his wife is from Scotland and she’ll be closer to home, which will be nice.”

Ali Al-Habsi started 32 times in goal for the Royals last year but at 34, he may not be expected to keep playing so many games.

Jaakkola is five years younger and has one full international cap for Finland, as well as one of the most interesting careers around.

Having played in Italy, Croatia, Scotland and South Africa, the keeper is now moving back to the UK with Reading.

This move appears to have come out of nowhere, but it’s an interesting one for all involved and it will be intriguing to see how Jaakkola adjusts.
