Wycombe announce Akinfenwa signing

League Two side Wycombe Wanderers have announced the signing of ex-AFC Wimbledon forward Adebayo Akinfenwa.

The 34-year-old was a free agent following his release from the Dons this summer.

The forward has played for a number of Football League clubs, including Northampton Town, Gillingham and Millwall.

Akinfenwa helped AFC Wimbledon with promotion to League One last season, scoring in both the semi-final clash against Accrington Stanley and the final against Plymouth Argyle.

The striker is best known for his size and strength, being a big presence in any squad. In addition to this, he has a wealth of experience in League Two.

In 247 total appearances in League Two, Akinfenwa has scored 81 and assisted a further 35.

Speaking about the deal, Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth told the club’s website that “everybody knows what Bayo is about and I’m so excited to have him here because he’s the right signing at the right time for us.

“I believe that bringing Bayo to the club shows our intent to give it a real push to go bigger and better than what we achieved last season.

“With Dayle Southwell, Paris Cowan-Hall and Myles Weston also coming into the club this summer, I’m delighted with the way we’ve been able to strengthen our attacking options and I know this signing in particular will get people talking.

“Bayo has had a phenomenal career and still has plenty to offer, not just on the pitch but also in the changing room because of his character and real leadership qualities.

“He’s kept himself fit over the summer and joins the squad at a perfect time just as we’re heading out to France for a pre-season training camp which will help everyone get to know each other better and enable us to put more plans in place for the year ahead.”

Wycombe Wanderers finished last season in 13th place, having accumulated 64 points in 46 games and posting a +1 goal difference.

Garry Thompson finished as Wycombe’s top scorer last season, with the midfielder netting seven goals in total.

Akinfenwa found the net on eight occasions last season, and will be looking to add to his League Two tally when Wycombe start of their 2016/17 campaign away to Crawley Town on August 6.
