Oldham Athletic appoint Northern Ireland coach as manager

Oldham Athletic have appointed Steve Robinson as their new head coach as confirmed by their club website.

The 41-year-old was the assistant manager at Motherwell but has now left that role to take up the reigns with the Latics. Oldham have been looking for a new manager after their previous one John Sheridan shocked the team by deciding to drop down a league and become the head coach of Notts County.

While Robinson has been the assistant at Oldham most recently, he was a notable figure on the sidelines for Northern Ireland during their Euro 2016 campaign. He was their first team coach and helped the team to progress into the last sixteen of an international tournament for the first ever time. His other coaching experience came at the several different youth levels of Northern Ireland.

Now though he will hope to help push Oldham further up League 1 in his first managerial role.

Following the appointment of Robinson, Oldham chairman Simon Corney said: “We are delighted to welcome Steve to the club as our first team manager.”

“He has a wealth of experience, both at club and international level and impressed me and the board straight away.”
“He has an outstanding reputation in the game and we believe his dynamic, methodical and thorough approach will quickly translate into success on the pitch.”
“In addition, he has identified and begun recruiting players whom he believes will excite our supporters and demonstrate the strong work ethic and attractive style of play he demands.”
“He has also been drawing on the extensive knowledge of Sean O’Driscoll and Lee Turnbull and has already identified additional staff he would like to bring in. We will be formally announcing these appointments in the coming days.”
