Newcastle United sign up Atletico Madrid defender

Newcastle United have signed Jesus Gamez from Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee as confirmed by the club website.

The 31-year-old will bring with him plenty of pedigree having competed in the Champions League on 12 different occasions and now will be hoping to use that experience of playing against the best in the world to Newcastle after he signed a two year deal with them.

Gamez, who most often plays as a full back, is a veteran of Spanish football as after starting at Fuengirola, he joined the academy of Malaga and progressed into the first team and even became their captain for three years before leaving for Atletico in 2014 after making 266 appearances. In his two years at Atletico, Gamez only made 24 appearances for them and will hope to return to regular first team football now that he has signed for Newcastle.

The main aim for Gamez now that he has on Tyneside will be to try and get the Magpies promoted to the Premier League at the first attempt after they were relegated last season.

The Spaniard becomes Newcastle’s fourth signing of the summer after Matz Sels, Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle also joined the club earlier in the transfer window.
