Aston Villa confirm new goalkeeper signing from Italy

Aston Villa have officially announced the signing of Hellas Verona goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini. The 21-year-old makes the move from the Italian club on a four-year contract. He is now with the rest of the first-team squad at their Austria training camp.

The Italian Under-21 international is highly-rated in the Italian game. Although he was relegated with Hellas Verona, his emergence into the first-team was one of the brighter points of their campaign.

Roberto Di Matteo hasn’t hid from the fact that he wanted a new goalkeeper at Villa Park this summer. It is understood that USA international Brad Guzan could be leaving. Nevertheless, Gollini provides competition for places anyway.

Speaking about his latest signing, Champions League winner Di Matteo says the club have beaten off big competition to his signature,

“I am very pleased to have brought in Pierluigi.

“We have managed to sign him despite the fact he was being chased by a number of top sides and that is a great sign.

“He’s a young man but has plenty of experience and I’m sure he’ll prove to be an excellent signing for the Club.”

Over the last two seasons, Gollini has played 30 times for Hellas Verona. He was between the sticks for the May victories against both Juventus and AC Milan.
