Champions League runner-up set for Newcastle medical

Atletico Madrid defender Jesus Gamez is closing in on a move to Championship side Newcastle United. Keith Downie, a reporter for Sky Sports News, says that he will arrive for his medical later today.

Rafa Benitez looks set to bring the Spaniard to St James’ Park. He has found it hard to break into the Atletico side in recent times. Nevertheless, the 31-year-old possesses plenty of domestic and European experience.

He mainly plays at right back, but can also play at left back. Gamez has also been known to occasionally fill in at centre back as well. The defender spent five years at Malaga prior to joining last seasons Champions League runners-up. Since switching clubs, he has started 30 matches in two seasons.

Benitez is keen to particularly improve his defence after relegation last season. The likes of long-serving duo Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini have already departed this summer. It is believed that one more defender, in addition to Gamez, will also join the club as well.

He still has a year remaining on his Atleti contract. Therefore, the transfer fee won’t necessarily be an excessively high one. He mainly played at left back in his first season with the club, so Benitez certainly has some versatility to add to his back four ahead of the new campaign.
