Ex-Villa full back interests rivals Birmingham

The Birmingham Mail reports that released Aston Villa left back Keiran Richardson is a transfer target for Birmingham City. The 31-year-old wasn’t offered a new contract by relegated Villa at the end of last season. He may be remaining in the local area.

Gary Rowett is keen on providing competition to Jonathan Grounds in the left back slot. Former Swansea City full back Dwight Tiendalli is currently on loan in their pre-season tour to Marbella. Richardson looks set to be another option they may explore.

After two seasons at Aston Villa, where he played 41 times, he left to seek pastures new. He can also count Fulham and Sunderland as former clubs of his. His career began at Manchester United, but he only started 20 Premier League games in five years.

He played in a more advanced position earlier on in his career. As he has got older, he has dropped into a left back role. He would bring with him plenty of experience at the highest level. He been capped eight times by the England national team, and also the Under-21 side.

Paul Robinson is another option in his squad to cover at left back, however he is now 37. In recent seasons he has been edging more towards the coaching side. He is expected to mainly act as cover in a defensive shortage from now on.
