Colchester United hoping to find next Jamie Vardy with non-league signing

Colchester United have signed Kurtis Guthrie from Forest Green Rovers for an undisclosed fee as confirmed by the club website.

The U’s have been looking to rebuild their squad ever since they were relegated from League 1 and are now hoping to be the latest team to have unearthed a non-league gem after he signed a two year contract with the club.

The 23-year-old striker is coming off the back of an impressive season which does make it seem like he could easily progress into League 2. Playing either as a striker or a winger, Guthrie was able to score 12 goals which helped Forest Green to get into the Vanarama National play offs. His form was noticed far beyond the club and was called up to the England C side where he scored against Ukraine.

Guthrie will now join up with the rest of his team mates ahead of their first friendly of pre-season against Malton & Tiptree.

More and more teams are starting to look towards non-league football in order to find their next star player. Peterborough United have been able to build their team out of non-league stars such as Dwight Gayle and George Boyd while in recent times player such as Jamie Vardy and Charlie Austin have managed to progress into the Premier League after starting in the depths of non-league.
