Charlton star set for Premier League switch

Charlton have accepted a £2.5 million offer from Burnley for Icelandic Euro 2016 star Johann Berg Gudmundsson, according to the South London Press.

Gudmundsson emerged as a lethal attacking threat for The Addicks in the Championship last season, finishing top of the league assists chart in the 2015/16 campaign.

However, the winger’s exploits weren’t enough to prevent Charlton from relegation to League One, with the drop to the third tier all but assuring the departure of the 25-year-old from The Valley this summer.

The tricky winger effortlessly transitioned his brimming skill-set from the Championship to the international stage this summer, playing an integral role in Iceland’s shock surge to the quarter-final stage at Euro 2016.

Upon Gudmundsson’s return from international duty, Charlton set to work on securing a suitable transfer fee for the 25-year-old.

New Addicks boss Russell Slade openly admitted Gudmundsson’s desire to play at a higher level, conceding the winger was the subject of rife interest from numerous clubs,

“It’s no secret that he’ll want to play at the highest level and his performances in the Euros won’t have done him any harm.

“It is honest to say that we have had interest.”

Despite apparent interest from Norwich City, it appears that Gudmunsson’s next destination is Turfmoor and the Premier League.

A report in the South London Press states that Charlton have accepted a £2.5 million bid with another £1 million in add-ons from newly-promoted top-flight outfit Burnley.

With Gudmundsson departing for the Premier League, Charlton will be eager to fill the attacking void left by the Icelandic winger, if they wish to secure immediate promotion back to the Championship this coming season.
