Golden Glove Winner (2008/09) – Radek Cerny (Queens Park Rangers) & Paddy Kenny (Sheffield United)
This is the only time the Football League Golden Glove award was shared. Both kept 17 clean sheets during this season. QPR were in the middle of quite a lengthy run as a Championship club. This campaign was their fifth in a row, and they would have two more before promotion. Sheff Utd ended the season in third, just three points behind Birmingham City in second.
We’ll start with QPR. They ended this season in 11th place. They ended the season 13 points off the last play-off place. Without a doubt scoring goals was their problem. They scored 42, conceding 44. It is very hard to achieve promotion with a negative goal difference! The Blades finished third but didn’t go on to win promotion via the play-offs. Burnley did just that, beating Sheff Utd in the Wembley final.
So where are these two now. We all know Paddy Kenny. He played for a string of clubs following his time at Bramall Lane. Now, he has just been named the goalkeeper coach at League One side Northampton Town. He will sign on as a player, but that is ‘only for emergencies’. So what about Cerny. He then moved on to Slavia Prague after five seasons with QPR before retiring from football.
