Swindon Town will not sell star striker

Swindon Town chairman Lee Power has said to BBC Wiltshire that he will not be selling Jonathan Obika this summer.

The Robins have already sold one of their top strikers this summer when top scorer moved to their League 1 rivals Charlton Athletic and reports have been suggesting that they could be about to lose another one.

Obika has only got one year left on his contract and he has rejected any offers put forward to him, making it very likely that he will be leaving the club at some point this summer.

However while some clubs are reported to be interested in signing Obika, Swindon will not be selling up anytime soon even though they could get a fee for a player that looks set to leave the club on a free transfer next summer.

Power may be taking this risk as the team suffered after selling a lot of their best players last summer and being forced to rebuild and doing that again could see the team struggle once again.

He said: “It’s unfortunate John doesn’t want to sign a new deal – that doesn’t make him a criminal,”

“He’s got to look after his family.”

“We won’t be selling any more – up front anyway,”

“John is going to play a pivotal part this year – we’ve got high hopes for John.

“I sat down with him and we both said next season is a big season for him and for us. Hopefully his goals will get us into the play-offs or even promotion.”
