Notts County leading race to sign out of favour Barnsley defender

Notts County are one of many teams chasing Barnsley’s out of favour Lewin Nyatanga according to a report from the Nottingham Post.

The 27-year-old defender had been a regular for the Tykes at the start of last season but was dropped at the end of 2015 and didn’t make a single appearance for them as the club went on a sensational run from the relegation zone to the play offs and then promotion.

And while Nyatanga does still have one year left on his current contract, Barnsley are keen to get rid as it’s unlikely he’ll make any impact on the first team now that they have returned to the Championship.

This has alerted many teams including Notts County who will be hoping to sign Nyatanga over the next few days. Their new manager John Sheridan has made it clear that improving their leaky defence is his number one priority this summer and has already gone some way to do that by signing the likes of Carl Dickinson, Matt Tootle and Richard Duffy.

If the Magpies were able to sign Nyatanga, he could be the final piece in their back four which Sheridan hopes can be the base he can build on for a promotion bid next season.
